Making Milwaukee Great: Theology on Tap
CBS News 58 in Milwaukee recently featured RENEW International's young adult outreach ministry, Theology on Tap on their "Making Milwaukee Great" segment.
ELM GROVE -- It's not unusual to find young people hanging out at O'Donoghues Irish Pub in Elm Grove, but it may seem out of the ordinary to see them listening to a priest speak.
It's all part of Theology on Tap, a speaker series that many churches within the Milwaukee Archdiocese put on for people in their 20's and 30's.
The idea is to get a discussion going on heavy hitting topics in a light hearted atmosphere.
"It's easier to talk, it can attract the attention of people who came to the bar but not expecting to hear about the Catholic faith," said participant Catherine Trojack.
She and about 30 others gather on Monday nights for four consecutive weeks at O'Donoghues to listen to a speaker and then engage in conversation. Snacks are free and so is beer.
"It good to gather together in a laid back setting, such as a bar/restaurant type place to get to know each other but also to grow in faith," said Brian Magliocco, Director of Youth Ministry at St. Mary's in Elm Grove.
He says after high school students make their confirmation, they aren't as active in the church. Magliocco hopes that Theology on Tap will bring them back and get them enthused about being involved in a local parish.
With topics like Jersey Shore: Faith and Sexuality, Too Busy for God? Think Again, and Sharing our Faith, Without Being Obnoxious, participants like Tom Klind make it a point to go to every one possible.
"You take away a little bit and learn something new that you take that back to the workplace or school or wherever you're coming from," said Klind.
Theology on Tap runs for one more week, July 30 to August 3, at a number of bars throughout the Milwaukee area. For a list, log onto http://www.johnpaul2center.org/NazarethProject/YoungAdult/Theology-on-Tap.htm
