2009 Gala Honorees RENEW International is pleased to honor...
Sister Alice Yohe, S.S.J.
President's Award
RENEW International celebrates Sister Alice Yohe, S.S.J., a Sister of St. Joseph, Chestnut Hill, PA, and one of the cornerstones of RENEW. She has worked enthusiastically and untiringly for 23 years as Executive Assistant to Msgr. Tom Kleissler, Founder/President.
Sister Alice played a significant part in the early years marked by RENEW’s incredible growth. As inquiries were funnelled through her, she engaged callers with a warm, welcoming reception, which extended diocesan inquiries to the point of dioceses initiating RENEW.
During her time at RENEW, Sister Alice served as Secretary of the Board of Trustees, developed a core of RENEW volunteers, and oversaw their work as Coordinator of Volunteers. Even in “retirement,” Sister Alice’s strong and faithful commitment to RENEW is evident as she offers her time and talent as RENEW’s archivist and in numerous other capacities.
Sister Alice, who holds a Masters of Science in Library Science, has ministered in many facets of education and service to the Church. Currently, she is Director of Religious Education at St. Joseph the Carpenter parish, Roselle, NJ, volunteers as Administrative Assistant to the principal of the parish school, and is Secretary of the Roselle Catholic High School Advisory Board. Always active in parish life, Sister Alice also served as the parish Small Christian Community Coordinator. In this capacity, she served as Secretary of the National Board of Buena Vista, an organization connecting small communities and providing resources for spiritual growth.
In the late 70s, Sister Alice began a hobby that has developed into a full-blown cottage industry. “Morning Star Chocolates” opened officially in 1990 with proceeds going to the retirement fund of the Sisters of St. Joseph, Chestnut Hill, PA. Since the beginning of our RENEW Galas, Sister Alice has provided her chocolates as after-dinner favors, delighting all our guests.
Among Sister Alice’s favorite RENEW memories are the wonderful people she worked with, the sense of community among dedicated staff, the daily Eucharistic liturgies and rich faith sharing, and the summers when international trainings took place in Plainfield or Convent Station. RENEW teams from Samoa, Guam, India, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Australia, and many other countries converged upon RENEW International for a six-week immersion experience—a rich and exhilarating time for guests and staff alike.
RENEW International honors Sister Alice Yohe for embodying RENEW’s mission and ardently proclaiming it wherever she goes.
